Teacher of History and Humanities

Rotterdam International Secondary School (RISS) is looking to recruit a gifted Teacher of History and Humanities (1 fte if possible) for the new academic year commencing August 2026. The candidate should be able to deliver within the international educational sector to the full age range, including Foundation Years (KS3), IGCSE and IBDP. The candidate’s English proficiency should be at a native or near-native level. We are looking for a committed practitioner who delivers within an inquiry-based approach, is flexible, and is prepared to take on transitioning exam years.

Please note: a DUO certification is required for this role, and the right to work within the EU.

The candidate should:

  • Demonstrate deep subject knowledge and a genuine passion for History, sharing an infectious enthusiasm for past and present global events with students.
  • Teach across the full secondary spectrum (Grades 6 to 12), adapting pedagogical approaches to suit both middle school learners and upper secondary students.
  • Plan and deliver engaging, inquiry-based History and Humanities lessons that foster critical thinking, source evaluation, and historical empathy.
  • Update and refine the Humanities and History scope and sequence to ensure vertical alignment across all grade levels.
  • Specifics to the role of History / Humanities Teacher include:

  • Teach (or demonstrate strong willingness to teach) History within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
  • Bring an interest in -or willingness to contribute to the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, helping students explore the nature of historical knowledge.
  • Be willing to serve as a pastoral tutor, providing pastoral care, monitoring academic progress, and building strong relationships with students and parents.
  • Guide students in developing advanced academic writing, source analysis, and research skills necessary for IBDP success (including Extended Essays and Internal Assessments).
