What are you going to do?

As a teacher for the 2nd year students you play an important role in supporting them to explore the wide range of the graphic design field. On the one hand you will help them to relate their designs to different public and spatial contexts and explore the possibilities of media, ranging from kinetic posters to immersive design, exhibition design and the tradition of book design. On the other, you will guide them through a process of material research and teach them how to visually document their design process and reflect on the steps to inform their final design choices.

You will guide our students during their learning process and ensure that the lessons align in terms of content and didactics with, and contribute to, the continuous learning pathway and are embedded within the program.

In addition, you will work on:

  • Contributing to the activities connected to Admissions
  • Organization of the Open Day
  • Join us in teaching the new generation graphic design students to translate their ideas into visual, engaging and societal relevant designs.

    Willem de Kooning Academie

    The Willem de Kooning Academy (WdKA) is a leading international academy for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in media, art, design, leisure and arts education.

    Team

    Within the Graphic Design department you collaborate with a dedicated team of approximately 15 teachers with a diverse background and expertise. Within the specific projects you collaborate closely with a smaller team of 3 to 4 experienced colleagues.

    Are we looking for you?

    You are a designer with educational experience who is knowledgeable about the developments within the graphic design field and have an open attitude to what is considered graphic design. You approach the use of technology and media critically and know how to connect to societal topics through design. Affinity with making or material research is a plus. 

    As a Lecturer in Graphic Design, you have strong communication skills, enabling you to share your knowledge and expertise with enthusiasm with our students. You look at students with an open mind and recognize their individual talent and learning ability. You are someone who works resourcefully and gains energy from finding creative solutions. In doing so, you radiate confidence, thereby contributing to a safe and open atmosphere. You connect with students, colleagues and external partners and bring together different perspectives.

    At the same time, you are reliable and feel responsible for both your work and the people around you. In this way, you actively contribute to an inclusive and inspiring learning environment in which everyone feels seen and valued.

    You also have:

  • Demonstrable didactic and pedagogical skills, such as inclusive communication and creating a healthy and safe learning environment;
  • A good command of Dutch (at a minimum C1 level) and English, both spoken and written;
  • Preferably a BKE certificate;
  • Preferably a master Degree in a relevant field.
  • What do we offer you?

  • At the start of employment with Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, we offer a one-year contract (D4 CAO HBO) for 10 hours (0,25 FTE) per week, starting August 24th 2026 till August 1st 2027;
  • Salary in scale 11: € 4.632,17 – € 6.677,44 gross per month based on full-time employment (salary scale based on knowledge and experience), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus;

  • Location

    You will work at the Blaak/Wijnhaven location of the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. This location is easily accessible by public transport.
