This internship focuses on identifying the financial realities for a major European logistics firm by analyzing their pricing structures and commercial assumptions. You will assist our senior team in uncovering the data points that either support or challenge the current expansion strategies of our clients.

About Blue Oak Consulting
Blue Oak Consulting provides independent advisory on pricing, portfolio economics, capital allocation, and acquisition assumptions. We are not a traditional consulting firm focused on broad transformation programs or high level strategy decks. Instead, we interrogate specific commercial decisions where the financial stakes are high and the existing narrative is not sufficient. Our team looks past corporate language and P&L complexity to identify where value is leaking or capital is trapped. We work across sectors like software, manufacturing, and healthcare to test whether the assumptions behind a growth plan or an acquisition actually hold under pressure. We are a small, principal led firm where the people who do the work are the ones accountable for the results. We do not take transaction contingent fees, which allows us to be completely honest about whether the economics of a decision make sense. Our goal is to provide clarity through financial discipline and a healthy amount of skepticism. We stay through the execution phase because decisions that look sound in theory often fail when they meet real world friction.

The Role
As an Intern Data Analyst, you will work in a fully remote environment as part of a small, focused team. You will spend your time digging through large datasets to find the facts behind a client financial projections. This is not a role about making aesthetic slides, but rather about ensuring the numbers are accurate and the conclusions are sound. You will be expected to maintain high standards of accuracy while working independently from your own location. The work is investigative in nature, requiring you to look for inconsistencies in financial reports and operational data. Because we are a small firm, you will see how your analysis directly contributes to the advice we give to senior executives.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Extracting and cleaning data from various sources provided by our logistics client to ensure a reliable baseline for analysis.
  • Developing financial models in Excel to test the impact of pricing changes and operational shifts on total profitability.
  • Assisting principals in reviewing historical P&L data to find evidence of value leakage or inefficient capital use.
  • Creating clear tables and charts that highlight discrepancies in financial assumptions for internal team reviews.
  • Writing brief summaries of your findings that avoid corporate jargon and focus on the underlying numbers.
  • Participating in team video calls to walk through the logic of your analysis and answer questions about your data sources.
  • Performing sensitivity analysis to see how small changes in fuel costs or labor rates impact the client bottom line.
  • Helping to document the specific data sources and calculation methods used in our final reports.
  • Verifying the accuracy of internal databases and ensuring that all project files are kept organized.

What You Bring

  • A background in economics, finance, mathematics, or a related field of study at the university level.
  • Intermediate skills in Excel, including familiarity with pivot tables, vlookups, and basic logical formulas.
  • A natural curiosity and a tendency to ask why when looking at a data set that does not seem to match the narrative.
  • The ability to work independently in a remote setting while staying in close communication through written updates.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially when double-checking calculations and ensuring data integrity.
  • A preference for clear and direct communication over complex business terminology or management speak.
  • Comfort with large spreadsheets and the patience required to clean messy data from different sources.
  • A basic understanding of financial statements like balance sheets and income statements.
  • Willingness to accept feedback and adjust your analytical approach based on the findings of the principals.

What We Offer

  • A fully remote work environment that allows for a flexible daily schedule and no commute.
  • Direct mentorship from the firm principals who have years of experience in high level financial advisory.
  • This is a paid internship with a competitive rate that reflects your skills and the requirements of the role.
  • Exposure to high stakes commercial decisions and complex financial puzzles that go beyond typical textbook problems.
  • The chance to see how theoretical financial models behave when applied to real world business friction.
  • A workplace culture that values honesty, evidence, and logical consistency over seniority or corporate hierarchy.
  • Practical experience in financial forensic work and data validation that is highly applicable to future roles in finance.

Working at Blue Oak Consulting means choosing to see things as they are rather than as they are presented in a marketing deck. We value people who take pride in the accuracy of their work and who are not afraid to point out when a plan does not make financial sense. Every task you complete contributes to a clearer picture for our clients, helping them avoid costly mistakes and find better ways to manage their capital. Our remote structure is built on trust and the shared goal of providing unconventional, evidence based advice.
