Job description
As a Fellow at Erasmus MC, you will play an active role within our renowned HPB and Transplant programmes, gaining extensive experience in liver and kidney transplantation. You will be involved in the assessment, management, and follow-up of both donors and recipients, while taking responsibility for perioperative patient care and participating in multidisciplinary team meetings.
You will receive dedicated training in abdominal multi-organ retrieval as part of our supra-regional multi-organ retrieval service, offering a unique opportunity to develop advanced surgical expertise. Depending on your interests and career goals, you may also contribute to our liver and pancreatic resection programmes.
Fellows are an integral part of our transplant and HPB teams and participate in the on-call schedules for adult kidney and liver transplantation, as well as multi-organ retrieval and HPB surgery. This fellowship offers a stimulating clinical environment with broad exposure to complex surgical care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and excellent opportunities for professional development.

The fellowship will be based at the division of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) and transplant surgery of the Erasmus MC Transplant Institute, which is the largest HPB/Transplant center in the Netherlands. Our team, consisting of 13 consultant surgeons, annually performs approximately 100 liver transplants, 220 renal transplants and 80 organ retrieval procedures. In addition, we perform about 100 pancreatic resections and 80 liver resections. Our transplant program and the HPB program is accredited for training by European Board of Surgery (UEMS).
As a fellow, you will join one of the largest European centres for living kidney donation and the largest centre in the Netherlands for hepatic and pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery. Pancreatoduodenectomies are performed using both open and minimally invasive techniques, including laparoscopic and robot-assisted approaches. Liver resections are performed through open and laparoscopic surgery. During your fellowship, you will gain experience in open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgical techniques.
A strong focus of the fellowship is on preoperative multidisciplinary patient assessment and postoperative patient care. The Rotterdam Transplant Team has a long-standing tradition of training both national and international fellows in laparoscopic and hand-assisted living donor nephrectomy techniques.
You will also be encouraged to participate in ongoing translational and clinical research. Our department has conducted numerous randomized controlled trials in transplantation and HPB surgery, with current research focusing on liver regeneration and organ perfusion.
Qualifications and skills
You are an ambitious and motivated surgeon looking to further develop your expertise in HPB and transplant surgery. You:
- Have successfully completed a recognized training programme to consultant level in General Surgery, or have completed at least five years of Surgical Specialty Training, and can demonstrate specialist-level surgical skills and clinical judgment, including advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques, evidenced by your portfolio.
- Are eligible for BIG registration in the Netherlands (see: https://english.bigregister.nl/registration) and can provide the required documentation for appointment, including a Certificate of Good Conduct, valid proof of identity, relevant diplomas and registrations (such as BIG and/or RGS).
- Have a strong interest in academic surgery and research. A PhD in a relevant field is considered an advantage, as is evidence of active research involvement in HPB and/or transplant surgery.
- Are enthusiastic about expanding your expertise in organ donation and transplantation, including participation in the Dutch Transplant Foundation’s Training-on-the-Job programme for abdominal organ retrieval (https://mod-surgery.org/website/), leading to certification within the national multi-organ retrieval service upon successful completion.
- Thrive in a multidisciplinary environment, communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and other healthcare professionals, and act in accordance with the core professional values of Erasmus MC.
- Are willing to learn Dutch to support patient communication and integration within the department, while being comfortable working in an international environment where most professional communication and meetings take place in English.
Please note that the fellowship has a maximum duration of two years, with formal evaluations every six months. The preferred start date is January 1, 2027.
Terms of employment
- A contract for the duration of the training program. The preferred start date is January 1, 2027.
- A gross monthly salary between € 7.727 and € 9.136 (scale MS) based on a full-time workweek of 40 hours (for surgeons eligible for BiG and RGS registration).
- An allowance for irregular working hours.
- Excellent secondary conditions, such as a 13th month’s salary paid in November and a personal travel allowance.
- A pension insurance policy with the ABP. We pay approximately two-thirds of the monthly contribution.
- An international office which aids you in preparing for you arrival and stay.
