Role: Backend Engineer (Freelance – 70-85 euro p/h)
Location: Netherlands (Hybrid – 2 days on-site in Rotterdam, 3 days remote)

A forward-thinking e-commerce company is seeking an exceptional backend engineer to lead a critical platform modernization initiative. This pivotal role will drive the complete rebuild and replatforming of their existing e-commerce infrastructure using cutting-edge technologies.
As a key contributor to this transformation project, you’ll work in a hybrid environment while architecting robust backend solutions that deliver scalable business outcomes. You’ll own the technical implementation of complex integrations and data migration strategies.

Your Impact (Key Responsibilities)
- Backend Architecture & Development: Design, develop, and deploy backend services using Java and Spring Boot 3+ within a modular monolith architecture
- System Integration & Migration: Implement complex, near-real-time integration patterns and execute data migration strategies from existing platforms
- Payment & Subscription Systems: Integrate with third-party services, focusing on payment providers and subscription business models
- Data Management & Performance: Manage data persistence using PostgreSQL and utilize Redis for queuing and event handling
- Collaborative Engineering: Participate in architectural decisions, ensure code quality, and collaborate within an agile team environment

Background:
- Minimum 3-5 years of strong proficiency in Java (REQUIRED)
- Based in the Netherlands and available to work 2 days per week on-site in Rotterdam (REQUIRED)
- Speaking Dutch is a plus
- Experience with Spring Boot framework
- In-depth experience with PostgreSQL and Redis for queuing/event-driven systems
- Proven experience with platform rebuilds or re-platforming projects
- Understanding of modular monolith architecture and e-commerce environments
- Experience with subscription-based business models and payment provider integrations
